NEHAWU Gauteng Statement On The Shooting Of A Nurse At Tembisa Hospital
Thursday February 10, 2022
The National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union [NEHAWU] in Gauteng has learnt with shock of the fatal shooting of a nurse at Tembisa Provincial Tertiary Hospital yesterday.
What is even more shocking is the fact that the perpetrator was an on-duty police officer. This tragic incident brings to light the inadequate protection of our members and workers receive from the Department of health.
As NEHAWU, we are concerned about the lack of proper security in hospitals and clinics across the province. As such, the government must immediately improve security service and develop standards of operations of this service to respond to this challenge.
The union will not stand idle while our workplaces are not safe. We refuse to allow a situation whereby workers come to work but are not secure nor protected. This shooting proves beyond reasonable doubt that security is non-existent in our healthcare facilities and more lives will be lost if immediate attention is not paid to this urgent matter.
We call on the government as a whole as well as the Department of Health in particular to take charge of the security of its patients and workers. Workers deserve to be safe in their places of work.
Lastly, we extend a message of condolences to the Monene family, friends, colleagues and our sister union DENOSA.
